Political Conservatism:
A political philosophy or attitude emphasizing respect for traditional institutions, distrust of government activism, and opposition to sudden change in the established order.
An isolationist policy was practiced by the Republican government in the 1920s. Therefore, the focus was on internal affairs, rather than international matters.

National Origins Act of 1924:
o Passed during Coolidge Administration.
o Restricted immigration from specified countries (Most excluded were the southern and eastern Europeans, and Asians).
o Based on annual quotas that allowed only 2% of the country’s population to migrate to the US based on the 1890 US census.
Ø Faced ridicule from patriotic groups, which feared the negative international opinion, and labor unions, which feared they would lose a large source of cheap labor.

Booming Business:
Another large piece of political conservatism came from President Calvin Coolidge. He was a strong proponent of deregulation of government intervention in business affairs.
o Coolidge’s administration made it easy for the rich to get richer, and for industry to take over the politics of the US.
o He did this by decreasing taxation on corporations and the upper class.
o The Supreme Court was also responsible for the grave support of large industry, seen through their conclusions in their cases.
· It seemed that the progressive era legislations that were in place around a decade or so before were now nonexistent.
o They denied the request for federally mandated work hours, pay, and conditions.
o Most notably, they denied a minimum wage and child labor laws during this time period.
· As a result, Progressivism faded into the past.
o Business boomed as a result of increased tariffs.
o Outside trade diminished, because foreign and American industry couldn’t afford the increased rates.
· Therefore, America became more self sufficient, resulting in a business boom, and agricultural meltdown.
· As a result of decreased foreign affairs, western farmers had fewer exports.
